The Nordic Research Monitoring Network (Nordic Monitor) is a non-profit organization that aims to raise awareness of radical and violent extremist trends in Europe and beyond, with a specific focus on patterns that disrupt peace and harmony among community groups, with an emphasis on Turkey. It hopes to contribute to the debate on how nations should prevent and combat radicalization with close cooperation and collaboration between all relevant stakeholders at all levels of governance with the involvement of the NGO community and civil society.<\/h1>\n

Nordic Monitor works as an intelligence platform that tracks extremism, radical movements, xenophobia, terrorism, crime and other relevant issues that are critical for the security of the communities in which we live. Its focus is specifically on Turkey, an 80-million-strong predominantly Sunni nation that has considerable influence beyond its borders.<\/p>\n

Monitoring Extremism<\/h3>\n

Extremism of all types is a threat to the security of nations as well as communities. The Nordic Research and Monitoring Network monitors enablers and facilitators of extremist ideologies and identifies early warning signs so that policy makers and nongovernmental stakeholders can take measures in advance to counter such threats. Nordic Monitor responds to its clients\u2019 specific needs with on-demand analysis and reports on such matters.<\/p>\n

Abdullah Bozkurt<\/h3>\n
Executive Director<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n

Abdullah Bozkurt<\/strong> (born August 5, 1971, in Turkey) is a journalist and author with more than 25 years of experience in Turkish and international media. He studied political science and international relations at Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University in Istanbul and at Columbia University in New York.<\/p>\n

Bozkurt has worked as a reporter in New York, Washington, D.C., Stockholm and Ankara. He is the author of Turkey Interrupted: Derailing Democracy<\/em> (2015), a book analyzing the collapse of Turkish democracy under the Islamist authoritarian rule of Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n

In May 2016, he founded a news agency called Muhabir in Ankara, which was shut down and seized by the Erdo\u011fan government only months later. He was subsequently forced to leave Turkey for Sweden amid a sweeping crackdown on journalists and media outlets during 2015\u20132016, a period in which around 200 media organizations were closed and Turkey became the world\u2019s leading jailer of journalists.<\/p>\n

He currently serves as president of the Stockholm Center for Freedom, a human rights advocacy organization, and as editor of the investigative news website Nordic Monitor. He is also a Writing Fellow at the US-based Middle East Forum and a member of the Swedish Journalists\u2019 Union (Journalistf\u00f6rbundet).\u00a0Bozkurt is married and has three children.<\/p>\n

Levent Kenez<\/h3>\n
\u00a0Deputy Executive Director<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0Levent Kenez<\/b> is a Turkish journalist and editor born in 1978 in Manisa, Turkey. After earning his degree in Political Science and International Relations from Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University, he began his career in 1999 at the business association \u0130\u015eHAD in \u0130stanbul, where he worked on publications and event organization. In 2005, he joined Zaman<\/i> daily, serving as editor for the op-ed pages and later the weekend supplements. In 2015, he became the editor-in-chief of Meydan<\/i> newspaper. Following the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, Kenez was detained during a police raid, and Meydan<\/i> was shut down by the government. As media repression escalated, he relocated to Sweden the same year.<\/p>\n

Kenez continues his journalism career as a reporter and editor at Nordic Monitor<\/i>, an English-language investigative news platform based in Sweden. He is also one of the founding members of the Stockholm Center for Freedom<\/i>, an organization that monitors and reports on human rights violations in Turkey. In addition, he produces and hosts the political commentary program Serbest At\u0131\u015f<\/i> on the YouTube channel TR724<\/i>. In 2020, Turkey requested his extradition from Sweden, but the Swedish Supreme Court rejected the request in 2021. He currently lives in Sweden.<\/p>\n
